This site was created to help bridge the communication gap between parents and elected officials. Education is the issue we have decided to focus on for this election. Click on the links above to see where candidates for the Florida House, Florida Senate, and the Pinellas School Board stand on issues such as recess and testing.
Thanks for voting!!!
Congrats to Eileen Long who was elected to the School Board in a tight race against incumbent, Dr. Ken Peluso. As a veteran educator, Long is an advocate for teachers and students of all abilities and we look forward to seeing what she can accomplish as a School Board member. She is also pro-recess and we are excited to have her on the Board.
Congrats also go out to Pinellas Parents for Healthy Schools member Matthew Stewart who will be in a runoff against Joanne Lentino. Stewart was the first candidate to join our Healthy Schools page and is a foster parent with a child at Meadowlawn Middle School! Stewart is a recess supporter and we look forward to hearing more of what he has to say in the coming months.
Finally, Eliseo Santana Jr. will be in a run-off against Carol Cook. Both Santana and Cook have been reaching out to our group to find out ways to make our schools healthier and happier places for students and staff. We look forward to continuing that dialogue with these two candidates.
Thank you to ALL the candidates who ran campaigns because they wanted to help the students of Pinellas County. We appreciate your service!
Recess Moms lobbied for recess last winter. We will be back this year! Here are parents from Orange, Polk, Lake, and Pinellas in the Florida Capitol.
Parents are busy. Politicians are busy. We get it. The kids have soccer, baseball, and underwater basket weaving after school. There is no time. But what if we could find a way to bridge the communication gap?
Pinellas Parents for Healthy Schools was founded in 2015 to bridge this communication gap and enhance grassroots parent advocacy through a social media platform (Facebook). The ultimate end goal has always been to make our schools healthier and happier places for all children.
Our new website, www.parentvote.org, is another vehicle for us to provide parents with information in a way that is more static than a constantly changing Facebook newsfeed. Can't remember which candidate you prefer when you go to the polls? Simply pull up this website and read up on where candidates stand on a few healthy schools issues. It's easier than scrolling through a newsfeed.
We recently asked school board candidates three parent questions and they were kind enough to respond with many thoughtful answers. We look forward to sharing candidates' answers with you over the next few days. Thanks for stopping by parent voters!
Stephanie Cox and Christie Bruner are two PTA moms who founded Pinellas Parents for Healthy Schools in 2015. Our goal was to make Florida schools healthier and happier places for children. We believe that all parents should be educated voters and we believe that parent advocacy creates a better learning environment for all children. Thanks for stopping by!
