About Pinellas Parents for Healthy Schools
Pinellas Parents for Healthy Schools was founded in 2015 by Christie Bruner and Stephanie Cox. The group has grown to over 900 parents and leaders from around the state who are committed to making schools healthier and happier for all students. Key issues for our group include the lack of recess in elementary schools, the school nurse shortage, high stakes testing stress, maintenance of strong PE programs, and cafeteria nutrition. Our group has been working with parents from around the state to bring recess back to children in the state of Florida. We lobbied for legislation to make recess mandatory. We hope that our advocacy efforts will eventually lead to every elementary student in the state of Florida having at least one recess break every day at school. Adults need breaks. Kids do too. Recess is important and it's worth fighting for to make sure ALL elementary kids have time for unstructured play during school.
